Adapted from DSM-IV Criteria for Major Depression

  • 5 or more of the following during the same 2 week period nearly every day.
  • At least 1 symptom is either a) depressed mood or b) loss of interest or pleasure

 

  1. Depressed mood most of the day
  2. Marked diminished interest or pleasure in normal activities
  3. Significant weight loss or weight gain
  4. Insomnia or hypersomnia
  5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation
  6. Fatigue or loss of energy
  7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  8. Reduced ability to concentrate
  9. Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts or attempts

  • There must be clinically significant distress or impairment of functioning
  • The symptoms must not be due to the effects of a general medical condition
  • This must not be due to the effects of a substance (eg drugs or medications)
  • A complete clinical evaluation is necessary to establish a diagnosis of depression
